Isla Mujeres: An Urbanite's Escape
Isla Mujeres, a place where leisure meets the crystal-clear blue waters and the subtropical humidity. But let me tell you, the journey to this island off Cancún was way longer than anticipated. The plane ride was a mere 4 hours, but without in-flight entertainment or onboard system, it felt like an eternity, probably cause I forgot to download anything too. And that was just the tip of the iceberg – I had to catch a bus, take a cab, not get scammed to pay more (It’s a good thing that I can speak Spanish), and board a ferry. I felt like I was missing just a train and a horse, and to top it off, I even ended up driving a golf cart at one point!
Staying at an all-inclusive resort was a relief, mainly because of the exclusive beach access. I won't lie, the food didn't earn any culinary stars, but after a day filled with water activities and touristy adventures, it was more than welcome. Plus the Ocean view from my room was the best thing to sleep and wake up to. Nothing like waves breaking to lull me to sleep.
Now, those three days on the island? They were worth every second of that long journey. I visited this fantastic cultural site with a statue of the Aztec goddess of fertility. It's now protected in Punta Sur, a charming pueblo májico, and let me tell you, it felt sacred, especially when the sun sets – absolutely breathtaking.
The Caribbean Sea boasts waters so clean and blue that you'd hesitate to dive into any other ocean. And the marine life? It's incredibly beautiful and abundant, although some residents come with a sting warning. What really surprised me, though, was how much I enjoyed snorkeling. Isla Mujeres, it's a paradise and just the vacation I needed.
